Banks fall on takeover talk

Bank of Ireland fell 85c to €9.37 on the back of a proposed deal which failed to impress the analysts. Irish Life and Permanent closed 27c lower at €11.13 and First Active slipped 5c lower to €4.55. Anglo Irish Bank fell 5c to €6 and IFG Group closed 13c lower at €0.57. Allied Irish Banks bucked the trend as it rose 5c to €12.25.

In the pharmaceutical sector, Elan dropped 10c lower to €1.40 and Galen Holdings slipped back 6c to €6.10. In the food sector Kerry Group fell 3c to €12.80 as Glanbia closed 4c lower at €1.46.
