IBEC seeks legal advice on HGV ban

IBEC has said it is seeking legal advice, with a view to lodging a formal complaint with the European Commission against Dublin City Council’s plan to ban heavy goods vehicles (HGV) from the city.

Last year, the European Court of Justice struck down a similar HGV ban by the regional government of Tyrol, Austria, on the ground that is was disproportionate and interfered with the free movement of goods.

Last Monday Dublin city councillors voted to ban trucks with five axles or more from the city centre between 7am and 7pm and also to ban access to Dublin port via East Wall Road on the northside and Seán Moore Road on the southside from January 1, 2007.
