Tea prices on the boil

East African tea prices rose 0.7% from last week at an auction in Kenya, boosted by demand from buyers in Egypt and Yemen, African Tea Brokers, said.

At this week’s auction in the Kenyan coastal town of Mombassa, 7.65 million kg of tea sold for an average price of $1.46 a kg compared with 7.42 million kg at $1.45 a kilogram last week.

Kenya, the world’s fourth-biggest tea producer, provided 78% of the tea sold at the auction, with the rest coming from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Zambia.
