EIRCOM deputy chairman Con Scanlon’s resignation as general secretary of the Communications Workers’ Union is being linked to a controversy over his dual role.

According to a union statement, Mr Scanlon has decided to step down from his CWU post in three months. The union did not give a reason for his departure and Mr Scanlon was not available for comment.

Recently, Mr Scanlon, 50, rejected claims of excessive earnings after it emerged he was given shares worth more than €580,000 for the re-floating of Eircom.
