Six arrests after woman attacked

GARDAÍ arrested six people after a young woman was viciously attacked in a house in east Cork.

The woman in her early 20s was repeatedly kicked and punched by the gang who attacked her in a house in the village of Castlelyons on Monday night.

Gardaí were alerted to the attack by a concerned passerby at around 8.30pm. Four men and two women were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The victim received medical treatment after the assault. Her mobile phone was also stolen by a member of the gang but it was later recovered by gardaí. The six arrested were taken to Fermoy Garda Station where they were questioned before being released without charge. A garda spokesman said a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It is understood one of the six came from Cork city, another was from Waterford and the rest were from the Castlelyons area. All of them were said to be in their mid 20s.

In a separate incident, a file is also being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions after a man was arrested on a flight from Cork Airport which was due to take off for Dublin at 10pm on Monday night.

Gardaí were called to deal with a man in his 50s who was allegedly drunk and disorderly. The man, believed to be from the west Cork area, was escorted off the plane and taken to Togher Garda Station. He was released without charge early yesterday morning.
