BT Group in move to hi-tech network

BT Group Plc, Britain’s former telephone monopoly, plans to move most of its traditional fixed-line customers to a new internet-based network by 2008, saving about £1 billion.

Operators across Europe including Spain’s Telefonica SA are rolling out new web-based systems as e-mails replace voice traffic over traditional fixed-line networks.
