Injunction paves way for Metro

DUBLIN moved closer to an all-out evening newspaper war yesterday as the High Court opened the door for a new freesheet to rival the Evening Herald that could hit the streets as early as next week.

Injunction paves way for Metro

The court granted an injunction to Fortunegreen, the company behind the planned new Metro paper, which will prevent Tony O’Reilly’s Independent News and Media (INM), the publisher of the Evening Herald, from launching a freesheet of its own that would contain Metro in the title.

The owners of the new paper, which is a joint venture between Metro International and British newspaper giant Associated Newspapers, wanted to stop INM publishing a paper that it intended to call the Herald Metro edition.
