Markets show strong front

EUROPEAN markets were stronger across the board yesterday. Shares in Dublin finished 47.70 points higher at 5179.58, with the financials leading the charge.

Bank of Ireland, which issued a pre-close statement indicating strong performance of all its divisions, jumped 29c to €10.59. AIB added 20c to €12.15 and Anglo-Irish strengthened to €12.83.

Irish Life & Permanent continued the positive mood in the sector gaining 70c to €13.55. Drug group Elan’s strong run continues, rising 27c to €16.13. In contrast, Galen saw it share price drop 7c to €12.65. Elsewhere, Ryanair had a solid day, up 17c. In construction, leaders CRH bucked the positive trend, easing 10c, despite news from the US of strong house sales in February.
