Alan Greenspan and concern about a US strike on Iraq battered investors’ fragile confidence.

Disappointing results from BAE Systems added to the depressed mood and the FTSE 100 Index tumbled 3%, closing 125.8 points lower at 4084.9.

The market had been on the back foot all morning but the sell-off gathered momentum when Wall Street moved lower in early trading.
