Modus Media plant to close with loss of 167 jobs
Labour Party TD for Dublin North, Sean Ryan described the announcement as “a further disaster for Clonshaugh following a series of closures and withdrawals in the area by other hi-tech companies”.
“During the 1990s Clonshaugh Industrial estate was home to a number of major employers for the entire north Dublin region.
“However, since Gateway 2000 pulled out a few years ago there has been a steady decline in the area as more and more companies have either closed down completely or fled to cheaper labour markets around the world.
“Modus Media have opted to shut down their printing facility altogether following a downturn in demand for their products due to the popularity of software. On this basis, I fear for the other 450 jobs at its other plants in Limerick and Kildare.
“The priority must be to return the 167 employees to the workforce as soon as possible. I am calling on the Tánaiste Mary Harney to intervene on their behalf, and to source new employment opportunities.
“The Labour Party has continually raised with the Taoiseach the need to generate employment opportunities for all of north Dublin. Clonshaugh Industrial Estate is central to the Northside Partnership and must be sold to potential employers as an attractive place to locate.”
