SMALL firms that ignore their social responsibilities will lose out, lobby group ISME warned yesterday.

Social responsibility ‘can help small companies gain extra business’

The small and medium enterprises’ group said its members needed to embrace the concept of so-called Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and play a central role in their local communities as well as demonstrate their commitment to the environment.

ISME chairman Robert Berney said small firms could use their position in the community to win business from bigger competitors. Mr Berney said customers felt closer to locally-owned businesses and that SMEs should lead the way in promoting social responsibility to gain an advantage over big business.
