Britain plays down shipping threat

The British Defence Ministry said yesterday there is no specific threat to merchant shipping from al-Qaida and other terror groups, following comments by Britain’s navy chief that terrorists have plans to target maritime trade.

There is no clear and current danger, said a ministry spokesman, who declined to be identified. Britain is aware that ships are a possible target for terrorists and that an attack would damage world trade, he said.
