In a major diversification move, the West of Ireland’s biggest co-op, Connacht Gold, announced yesterday that it is to develop a €15 million retail and residential project in Swinford, Co. Mayo.

The development will be located at the co-op's cattle mart premises and will consist of a shopping complex including an 18,000 sq ft supermarket to be operated by a leading Irish retailer.

It will also include seven shopping units under one roof.

Connacht Gold's retail store will also be extended while a childcare facility, offices and 26 townhouses and an apartment block designed around a courtyard are also included in the project.

The entire development, which will result in the closure of the livestock mart, is expected to create 60 new jobs.
