Biggest gain for Abbey shares

Shares of Abbey National Plc had their biggest gain in six months after the Financial Times said Santander Central Hispano SA expressed an interest in buying the lender.

Abbey is in the middle of a three-year reorganisation undertaken by chief executive Luqman Arnold after a foray into investment banking by his predecessor sparked two years of annual losses.
