Jimmy Kimmel struggled to hold back his tears during the opening monologue to his US talk show, describing Donald Trumpâs victory in the US presidential election as a âterrible nightâ.
The comedian led US late-night chat show hosts offering their reaction after Mr Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, with Stephen Colbert noting the âdeep shock and sense of loss is enormousâ and Seth Meyers calling Mr Trump a âbad personâ.
Meanwhile the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! kicked off his monologue noting that the choice for US president came down to a prosecutor and a criminal, âand we chose the criminalâ.
âMore than half of this country voted for the criminal who is planning to pardon himself for his crimes. I guess this election wasnât rigged,â he joked.
Becoming emotional, Kimmel continued: âIt was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go, for health care, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for free speech.
âIt was a terrible night for poor people, for the middle class, for seniors who rely on social security, for our allies in Ukraine, for NATO, for the truth, and democracy and decency.
âAnd it was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him. And guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him too, you just donât realise it yet.â
Kimmel described it as a âreally good nightâ for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and âlovable billionaires like Elon Muskâ as well as âall the wriggling brain worms who sold what was left of their souls to bow down to Donald Trumpâ.
He joked his only request to Mr Trump is that he âshare a prison cell with Taylor Swiftâ after they both endorsed Ms Harris for president.
Meanwhile, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert host began his opening monologue with a statement: âWell f***, it happened again.â
Colbert continued: âAfter a bizarre and vicious campaign fueled by a desperate need not to go to jail, Donald Trump has won the 2024 election.
âThe deep shock and sense of loss is enormous.â
Similarly, The Late Night With Seth Meyers presenter also kicked off his show reflecting on the election, admitting he voted for Democratic nominee Ms Harris.
âI donât think Donald Trumpâs a good person, Iâd even go so far as to say heâs a bad person,â Meyers said.
âNow, in my defence, Iâm only basing that on everything Iâve ever been taught about what makes someone good or bad. Thatâs it.
âAnd this is real and this is something I accept, half the country thinks heâs a good person or they donât care that heâs not because they think heâs a good president and because of that, heâs going to be our president again.
âThatâs how democracy works in America. A country that is a privilege to live in.â
