Taiwan’s former president Lee Teng-hui ‘dies aged 97’

Former Taiwanese president Lee Teng-hui, who oversaw the island’s transition to full democracy, has died aged 97, according to local media reports.

Mr Lee brought direct elections and other democratic changes to the self-governed island despite missile launches and other fierce sabre-rattling by China.
