Octogenarian ex-astronaut Buzz Aldrin has been airlifted from the South Pole to a New Zealand hospital after falling ill.

Aldrin, 86, the second man to walk on the moon, who was visiting Antarctica as a tourist, was flown to Christchurch from McMurdo Station, a US research centre on the Antarctic coast.
