French government given go ahead to clear Calais 'jungle camp'

The French government's plan to clear part of the Calais migrant camp known as the "Jungle" has been approved by French court.

Authorities say around 1,000 migrants will be affected by the eviction plan for the southern part of the camp.

Aid agencies say the number of people living there is much higher and conditions are reported to be terrible.

Chief Reporter for Channel 4 news Alex Thomson says the authorities do have plans to locate migrants at a different location

“There is a small area to the North that is spanking new, basically white industrial containers, double deckers, stairs up to the upper level.

“And that has been put in there with proper drainage, water systems and everything to accommodate some 800 people.

“And the French say most of the people that are going to be evicted almost all of them can be accommodated there.”
