'Mustard gas used' by Syrian insurgants in August

Mustard gas was used by insurgents in Syria in an attack that likely killed an infant, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has confirmed.

Friday’s statement was the first official confirmation that sulfur mustard, often called mustard gas, has been used by insurgents in Syria.

Inspectors found evidence of mustard gas use by insurgents in the town of Marea on August 21, a statement said.

The international watchdog also said that another mission investigating allegations that toxic chemicals were used as weapons in Syria’s civil war found that chlorine was likely used in March this year during fighting in Idlib.

The findings, which do not apportion blame for the chemical attacks, will be sent to the United Nations Security Council.
