NATO members agree to rapid response force for Baltic

NATO has unveiled tough new measures to stop Russian aggression in the Baltic States.

A new rapid response force has been announced which could deploy thousands of troops at short notice if necessary, while member states have agreed to provide military assistance to Ukraine.

"All 28 NATO allies will now provide security assistance to Ukraine," said US President Barack Obama, outlining the decision.

"This includes non-lethal support to the Ukrainian military, like body armour, fuel, and medical care for wounded Ukrainian troops - as well as assistance to help modernise Ukrainian forces including logistics and command and control."

The announcement came towards the end of a two-day summit in the south of Wales, which also heard of the ceasefire agreed between the Ukrainian government and rebel forces as proceedings drew to a close.

The NATO members also agreed to increase spending on defence, with a target of 2% of GDP.
