Fighters from Nigeria’s Boko Haram militant group have seized Gwoza town, overwhelming soldiers based in the north-east area before attacking civilians, according to security officials and a witness.

They said the new Emir of Gwoza - a formal title of office - Muhammed Idrissa Timta, has also gone missing after attackers were seen approaching his residence during the attack. He succeeded his father who was killed by Boko Haram in May.
