Elderly man attempts night-time escape from care home

An 87-year-old man in Italy dramatically escaped from his residential care home in by fleeing in his electric wheelchair in the early hours.

Raffaele Panicucci left the home in Montemarciano in the middle of the night because he was fed up of being surrounded by elderly residents, and he claims he would have gone "completely crazy" if he had stay there much longer.

He is quoted by the Daily Mail newspaper as saying: "It was full of old people. I could not stand it any more. I just had to get out of there. If I stayed there any longer, it would have driven me completely crazy.

"Every day is the same. There is no adventure and I just had to get out and get some space of my own. I may have lost my mobility, but I have not lost my nerve and sense of adventure."

But Raffaele didn’t make it very far as drivers spotted him and reported him to the police, who took him back to the care home.
