Brown calls on club to admit women

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has urged one of Britain’s most famous golf clubs to end the “injustice” of not allowing women to be members.

Mr Brown criticised the “inequality” of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews.

He spoke out after the Augusta National Golf Club in the US, which hosts the US Masters, announced its decision to admit women members.

The Royal And Ancient in St Andrews should follow that example, the former Labour leader said.

“If the golf club in Augusta can start to admit women, shouldn’t St Andrews?

“Shouldn’t the Royal and Ancient Golf Club admit women to their membership?

“If they can do it in a southern state, can we not do it in Scotland?

“I think we’ve got to think hard and long about issues of discrimination in our own country where we’ve got to tackle inequality and tackle that injustice.”
