Peter Cullen, iconic voice of Transformers' Optimus Prime, dies aged 85

The Canadian voice actor became synonymous with Optimus Prime while also giving life to Eeyore and numerous other characters

Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor best known for playing Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, has died aged 85.

Cullen died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, with his death confirmed by his family. His cause of death has not been disclosed.

In a statement, his family said: “Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family - and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. 

"His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember 'be strong enough to be gentle.'” 

Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, in the original Transformers animated series in 1984. 

He returned to the character across the franchise's subsequent television series, films and video games, including the live-action movies beginning in 2007.

His distinctive voice also became synonymous with Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise. 

He had a wide-ranging career in animation and film, including voicing the Predator's vocalisations in the 1987 film Predator and KARR in Knight Rider.

Cullen's career spanned more than six decades and made him one of the most recognisable voice performers in popular culture.
