Mandela celebrates 94th birthday

Nelson Mandela is celebrating his 94th birthday. He is not expected to make a public appearance.

Former American president Bill Clinton visited Mr Mandela last night at his home in the South African village of Qunu.

Millions of Mandela supporters around the world are expected to mark the day by taking part in charity projects.

One of them is Mandela's former Robben Island cellmate Ahmed Kathrada, who said: "We hope that under his legacy, people in South Africa will have got rid of poverty, hunger and unemployment.

"We can only say we are happy when that happens."
