A passenger jet with 127 people on board has crashed close to the Pakistani capital, aviation officials say.

They said the Bhoja Air jet crashed as it was landing in bad weather in Islamabad.

Witnesses close to the Baria Town residential complex near the airport say emergency vehicles can be seen in the area.

Pakistan's defence minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhar said the Bhoja Air jet came down just a few miles away from the airport in Islamabad.

He said the aircraft was travelling from the country’s largest city of Karachi to the capital when it burst into flames.

There was no immediate word on any survivors after the jet crashed in farmland near Benazir Bhutto International Airport.

A violent storm lashed parts of the capital around the same time as the crash.

Emergency official Saifur Rehman told Geo TV: “We can see the plane’s wreckage is on fire and we are trying to extinguish it.

“We are looking for survivors.”
