Man arrested over theft of bag from accident victim

A man has been arrested in Britain on suspicion of stealing a handbag belonging to a woman who had just been killed in a road accident.

Sarwari Ashraf, 62, from Longsight, Manchester, died in a collision with a vehicle while crossing Upper Brook Street, near to its junction with Hathersage Avenue, last Thursday morning.

Her black handbag and shoes disappeared from the scene as she lay dead.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “A man has been arrested after a handbag went missing from the scene of a road traffic collision where a woman was killed.

“The 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft and remains in police custody.”

A 40-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving has been bailed pending further inquiries until May.
