Four dead after attack on India polling station

Four people died when a separatist rebel in north-east India opened fire at a police station where election voting was being held.

The police superintendent of Manipur’s state district of Chandel said the gunman had posed as a voter in line, but then pulled out a revolver inside the building and started shooting indiscriminately.

Superintendent Priyo Kumar Singh said the gunman killed two election workers, a paramilitary officer and a woman.

The gunman is believed to have been a member of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, which has been fighting for decades for an independent homeland. About two million Nagas live in north-east India bordering Burma.
