Gingrich gathers momentum with South Carolina win

Newt Gingrich stormed to a shock victory over Mitt Romney in the South Carolina primary today, scrambling the race to choose a Republican challenger to President Barack Obama.

Returns from 30% of South Carolina's precincts showed Mr Gingrich gaining 41% of the vote, to 26% for Mr Romney. Mr Santorum had 18% and Mr Paul 13%.
