Mubarak's security chief jailed on corruption charges
An Egyptian court has convicted the top security official of ousted president Hosni Mubarak on charges of corruption and money-laundering, sentencing him to 12 years in jail.
The verdict against former interior minister Habib al-Adly was the first against any of the two dozen Mubarak-era Cabinet ministers and regime-linked businessmen who have been detained since Mubarak’s February 11 downfall.
Al-Adly is separately facing charges that he had ordered the deadly use of live ammunition against unarmed protesters during the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak.
If convicted, he would face the death penalty.
