Train set ablaze in fare row

Passengers set a South African commuter train on fire over a fare dispute, causing damage estimated at 11.75m Rand (€1.21m).

Metrorail spokeswoman Lillian Mofokeng said that commuters set the train on fire after they were caught without valid tickets.

No one was hurt, and Metrorail authorities evacuated the 26 passengers. The train was running between Johannesburg and the capital of Pretoria.

The economic hub of Johannesburg has poor and unsafe transport infrastructure.

Ahead of the World Cup last year, the government launched a bus system but its routes are limited.
