Daniel Defoe rescued from remote island

Coastguards in Scotland saved a man marooned on a remote island – called Daniel Defoe.

Unlucky Defoe – whose namesake is the author who created book character Robinson Crusoe, who spent 28 years as a castaway – was stranded on Cramond Island with a female partner when the tides began to rise.

He rang for help on his mobile phone but was reluctant to admit that he shared his name with the famous writer.

A spokesman for Forth coastguard said: "The man was a bit sheepish about revealing his name at first.

"This Daniel Defoe did all the right things and the rescue was relatively straightforward."
