Panama seeking extradition of former dictator
Panama is again seeking the extradition of former dictator Manuel Noriega from France, this time for his role in the killing of the leader of an attempted military coup in 1989.
The Foreign Ministry said that France has not yet responded to the extradition request.
A Panamanian court has convicted Noriega over the death of military commander Moises Giroldi, who led a failed rebellion on October 3, 1989. Noriega faces 20 years in jail.
The dictator was ousted by a US invasion a few months after Cmr Giroldi’s uprising.
After serving 20 years in a US prison, he was sent to France last year, where he was convicted of laundering drug money and received a seven-year sentence.
Panama previously sought his extradition over a 1985 killing.
