Gunman kills six in apartment rampage

A gunman killed six people and wounded at least nine in a Slovakian apartment building today, then committed suicide.

The man, armed with a machine gun and two pistols, was not identified, and police they did not know what had motivated the attack.

The shooting took place at mid-morning in the Devinska Nova Ves district on the outskirts of the capital Bratislava.

Five of the dead – four women and a man – were shot inside the apartment and another man was shot and killed outside.

The attacker did not see that several police had arrived at the building as he was leaving it, and he apparently fired indiscriminately at people in the area, wounding at least nine of them, including a policeman.
