UN backs Darfur arrests

The United Nations Security Council has supported International Criminal Court’s demand to arrest a Sudanese governor and a militia leader accused of atrocities in Darfur.

The current council president, Mexico’s UN ambassador Claude Heller, agreed that “the general sense” of the 15 council members was that Sudan should comply with the court’s demand and hand over South Kordofan governor Ahmed Harun and Janjaweed militia leader Ali Kushayb.

They are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
