A priest who investigated allegations of sex abuse on around 200 deaf children over 24 years defended the Vatican's handling of the case today, saying it was unfair to drag the current Pope into the scandal.

The Rev. Thomas Brundage, who in the mid-1990s helped investigate the allegations against the Rev. Lawrence Murphy in Wisconsin, said that the Vatican's office of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith receives an enormous amount of mail.
