A painting of Australia’s most notorious outlaw sold at auction for AUD$5.4m (€3.6m), a record bid for an Australian artwork.

The 1946 Sidney Nolan painting of Ned Kelly sold to an unidentified telephone bidder at the auction house Menzies Art Brands.

The painting features Kelly in his armoured helmet pointing a rifle.

Kelly led a gang of bank robbers in Australia’s southern Victoria state in the 19th century.

He is regarded by historians as a Robin Hood-like figure who challenged the British colonial authorities of the time.

The previous record for an Australian artwork was AUD$3.48m (€2.36m) for Brett Whiteley’s The Olgas for Ernest Giles in 2007.
