A former president of Bosnia was arrested at Heathrow airport today over alleged war crimes, British authorities confirmed.

Ejup Ganic, 63, was picked up by officers this morning following a request from the Serbian government.

He is accused of conspiracy to murder wounded soldiers in breach of the Geneva Convention.

Dr Ganic served as both vice-president and president of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina after it broke from the former Yugoslavia.

Today’s arrest, at around 2pm, was made under a provisional extradition warrant.

The Serbian government accuses him of conspiracy over the attack, which took place in Sarajevo at the beginning of the conflict.

Following his arrest, Dr Ganic appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

The Serbian authorities are now expected to file papers to support their extradition request ahead of a hearing date being fixed.

In a statement, the British Foreign Office confirmed the arrest, but added: “As the case is now before the courts, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
