Iran seeks changes to UN uranium plan

Iran will agree to the “general framework” of a UN-drafted plan to ship enriched uranium out of the country for processing, but will seek “important changes” in the deal, state television said today.

The report on the state-run channel Al-Alam did not specify the amendments Iran will seek. It said Iran would officially reply within 48 hours.

The plan calls for Iran to ship 70% of its enriched uranium abroad for further enrichment. The US and its allies see the deal as a way to at least delay Iran’s ability to build a nuclear weapon. Iran denies any intention to build a bomb.

Another Iranian state channel, Press TV, said Tehran was opposed to sending the entire shipment abroad at once, suggesting it wanted to do it in stages.
