Trousers 'too sexy' for school

A school in the UK has angered parents by banning tight-fitting trousers which are “too sexy” for the classroom.

Teachers at Nailsea School in North Somerset said the “Miss Sexy” branded garments are unsuitable because they leave a visible underwear line – and pupils who refuse to change will be made to work alone in an empty room.

Pupils have worn the trousers for the last three years, but they were banned following a uniform crackdown introduced when the school relocated to new premises over the summer.

Head teacher David New sent several pupils home for wearing them, and has advised parents to by new “official” trousers.

But some parents have refused to pay up to £16.99 (€18.36) for the recommended trousers - because they are “almost identical” to the old ones.

Jane Dalby, 49, and her husband John, 54, were told by letter that their 14-year-old daughter, Alex, would be sent home if she did not change her attire.

Mrs Dalby told the Western Daily Press: “These trousers have been fine for the last three years and my daughter looks very smart wearing them.

“I’m fully supportive of the school and I’m not trying to be awkward, but I really don’t see what’s wrong with them.

“The ones from the school shop don’t fit properly because they have longer legs. The new rules really are over the top.”

After the summer move, the 1,350 pupils were told they must change their old navy blue jumpers for black ones and also ensure they wear “black trousers”.

But since the new school year began in September, many schoolgirls have got into trouble for wearing Miss Sexy trousers.

Teachers claim the £10 (€10.80) trousers are inappropriate because they are tighter fitting, have bronze buttons and carry a brand label.

Mr New said the row only concerned a “small minority” of pupils, and he has given parents a month to buy new trousers, or their children will face further punishment.

He told the Western Daily Press: “We don’t want trousers that are unduly tight because they show off the students’ underwear when their jumpers aren’t on.

“We don’t think a logo that says Miss Sexy sends across the right message about our school or students.

“If students wear the wrong trousers they will be sent home to change. If they still don’t change, then we have found a spare room for them to work in alone.”
