Terror suspect held at New Delhi railway station

A man suspected of belonging to banned Pakistani-based terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba has been arrested carrying explosives at New Delhi railway station.

The 27-year-old accused, known only as Yusuf alias Salim, was held yesterday just before he boarded a train. He was being quizzed by police today.

Reports suggest he was on his way to the Indian state of Maharasthra and could be a bomb expert.

Police said they recovered 13lbs of explosives, four timers, two detonators and batteries hidden among clothes in a briefcase he was carrying.

A court in the Indian capital has reportedly placed the suspect in police custody for 14 days. A team from the Mumbai Anti-Terror Squad is expected to quiz him.

There is conflicting evidence about his nationality, with both a Pakistani passport and an identity card from the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir recovered from him.

The man is suspected to have been on his way to a Maharashtrian town called Nanded, considered a religious place for Sikhs. Crowds of people are currently in the town due to the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.

A national news report suggests he is wanted in connection with an explosion at a railway station in Gujarat in 2006.
