Italy train crash toll rises

The death toll from an Italian train explosion earlier this week rose to 20 today when a woman died overnight in hospital.

Fifteen injured people are still in a serious condition.

The train, carrying liquefied gas, derailed at around midnight on Monday in the Tuscan seaside town of Viareggio, setting off a massive explosion that destroyed nearby homes.

Viareggio’s damaged railway station partially reopened today.

Meanwhile, Italian railway company Trenitalia said it had suspended transportation of all rail carriages registered with US rail and marine leasing company GATX.

Vienna-based GATX Rail Europe owns the gas carriages involved in the derailment.

Italian officials have blamed the disaster on a broken wheel axle on one of the carriages.
