An explosion at a factory in eastern China has killed 16 people and injured dozens more.

An explosion at a factory in eastern China has killed 16 people and injured dozens more.

An official from the State Administration of Work Safety said 16 people died in the explosion that occurred at 3am local time today in Fengyang, a county in Anhui province.

Xinhua News Agency and state broadcaster CCTV said 44 people were injured.

The official said the factory produces quartz sand.

Xinhua said most of those killed were factory workers but local residents were among the injured.
