Police say at least 10 people were killed today in southern Thailand when gunmen opened fire on a mosque during evening prayers.

Police say five or six men with automatic rifles opened fire on a mosque in Narathiwat province. Among those who died at the scene was the mosque’s Imam.

Police say another 19 people were wounded, including 13 seriously.

The attack is one of the most deadly single incidents since an Islamic separatist insurgency was launched in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces in early 2004.

More than 3,400 people have been killed in the violence, most victims of the insurgents.

Last week, two teachers were killed in an attack in the same province.
