Sri Lanka claim troops enter Tamil Tiger stronghold

Sri Lanka’s military said its forces have entered the Tamil Tiger rebels’ last stronghold of Mullaittivu in the country’s north-east.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara says the troops fought their way into the town today and were waging battles with small pockets of rebel fighters.

Many of the remaining rebel fighters were presumed to be in the nearby jungles.

The fall of Mullaittivu would mean the rebels had lost the last town under their control.

The military captured the rebels administrative capital of Kilinochchi earlier this month and promised to crush the rebel group.
