Greece hit by seventh day of rioting

Greek youths hurled stones and broken paving slabs at riot police who responded with volleys of tear gas in central Athens today.

It is the seventh straight day of unrest over the fatal police shooting of a teenager.

Today’s clashes broke out in and near the capital’s Syntagma Square. Streets leading to the city centre were cordoned off.

Protesters also entered the National Bank of Greece’s main branch in the centre of the capital, sending staff fleeing in panic.

One protester walked up to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside Parliament and threw a black-and-red anarchist flag at the monument.

The riots are the worst Greece has experienced in decades.

They broke out within hours of the death of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos death last Saturday.
