Burmese journalist jailed

A Burmese journalist has been sentenced to two years in prison for her coverage of a protest over the lack of junta relief for victims of a devastating cyclone.

Colleagues who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation said Ein Khaing Oo was sentenced on Friday after being convicted in a closed-door trial on charges of “disturbing tranquility”.

The reporter had been detained for five months.

The trial followed a string of recent long prison sentences given to critics of the ruling junta. At least 50 people have been sentenced in the past week.

Ein Khaing Oo, a reporter for the weekly Burmese-language magazine Eco Vision, was arrested on June 10 while covering a demonstration by about 20 victims of Cyclone Nargis.
