The head of China’s food safety watchdog resigned today over the contaminated baby formula scandal that has poisoned nearly 53,000 children.

Li Changjiang’s departure came after the industrial chemical melamine blamed for kidney stones and kidney failure in babies was found in infant formula and other milk products from 22 dairy companies.
