Police have today prevented Zimbabwe's main opposition leader from reaching an election campaign site.

Morgan Tsvangirai was stopped at a road block on the way to a mine near the second main city of Bulawayo.

Mr Tsvangirai had planned to address workers at the mine. Police told him they believed the rally would be disruptive.

Mr Tsvangirai turned back and headed to a site where a later campaign stop had been planned.

Mr Tsvangirai faces President Robert Mugabe in a June 27 presidential run-off election.

His campaign has been continually hampered by violence blamed on police, soldiers and militants who support Mugabe.

Violence against the opposition also has undermined chances for a free and fair vote.
