Russia’s upper house of parliament has approved a proposed law allowing visa-free entry on special occasions such as soccer’s Champions League final.

The Federation Council passed the Bill early today and sent it to president Dimitry Medvedev to be signed into law.

The law will ease passage into Russia for some 42,000 British football fans expected to attend the May 21 Champions League final in Moscow between Manchester United and Chelsea.

Federation Council members say the law may also be applied for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
